Öyvind Fahlström – Avantgarde, Pop & Politics

The film series at Stadtkino Basel is dedicated to the significance of cinema in the work of Öyvind Fahlström.


The work of the visual artist Öyvind Fahlström (1928-1976) points to cinema from various directions. On the one hand, Öyvind's interest in the fluidity of meanings and in processes of signification in his visual art led to a dissolution of fixed compositions and a kinetic painting, the «variable paintings», as well as to other time-based art forms. On the other hand, cinema as a central place of popular culture was an intellectual as well as artistic field of experimentation for him. The series brings together films from the artist's historical environment to illuminate aspects of his complex oeuvre as a form of sensual thinking.

A grand exhibition with multitalented Öyvind Fahlström (1928–1976) and over 80 of his friends in poetry, art, music, dance, theatre, performance, film in Rome-Stockholm-Paris-New York during the creative 50s-70s, in a 50/50 gender mix including Marisol, Warhol, Kogelnik, Cage, Ringgold, Rauschenberg, Oldenburg, Lebel, Bontecou, Matta, Niki & Jean and others.
