Suzanne Lacy (artist) and Timm Kroeger (artistic team) in conversation with curator Dr. Sandra Beate Reimann (in English)

The starting point for the performance De tu puño y letra. Diálogos en el ruedo (By Your Own Hand: Dialogues in the Ring) was a project by the city of Quito, the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Quito, UN Women, and the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) Ecuador, aimed at combating violence against women. As part of the Cartas de Mujeres campaign from 2011 to 2012, around 11,000 letters were collected from people sharing their personal experiences, or accounts of witnessed or experienced violence against women. Based on workshops with local participants, the artist, together with the involved individuals, developed the idea of reactivating the Cartas de Mujeres and bringing institutional and public attention and recognition to them.

On the occasion of the opening of the exhibition Suzanne Lacy: By Your Own Hand, the curator Dr. Sandra Beate Reimann will speak with the artist Suzanne Lacy and Timm Kroeger. Timm Kroeger worked as a GIZ staff member for Cartas de Mujeres and was part of the artistic production team on site. As part of the project, he conducted workshops with male participants on the social construct of masculinity and gender-based violence.

Suzanne Lacy: By Your Own Hand

In her video installation «De tu puño y letra (By Your Own Hand)» (2014–2015/2019), Suzanne Lacy puts us in the middle of a bull fighting arena and confronts us with harrowing accounts of women’s experiences of violence. The Los Angeles-based artist has been a pioneer of social practice, feminism and performance art since the 1970s.
