Panel discussion | Gender-based violence in Switzerland

Discussion with Alexandra Frank, Public Prosecutor of Basel-Stadt, and Anna-Béatrice Schmaltz, Head of «16 Days Against Violence Towards Women», in collaboration with Victim Support of both Basels.

In the first eight weeks of 2025, there have already been eight femicides in Switzerland. A tragic record! The implementation of the Istanbul Convention, ratified in 2018, is progressing, but what does it really bring? To what extent do all these measures address the roots of gender-based violence? What role do current law enforcement and judicial practices play – especially here in Basel?

Panel discussion with Alexandra Frank, Public Prosecutor of Basel-Stadt, and Anna-Béatrice Schmaltz, Program Manager for Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Head of the «16 Days Against Violence Towards Women» program at Frieda – the feminist peace organization.

Moderation: Beat John, Managing Director of Victim Support in both Basels, and Dr. Sandra Beate Reimann, Curator of the exhibition.

Venue: Museum Tinguely

Suzanne Lacy: By Your Own Hand

In her video installation «De tu puño y letra (By Your Own Hand)» (2014–2015/2019), Suzanne Lacy puts us in the middle of a bull fighting arena and confronts us with harrowing accounts of women’s experiences of violence. The Los Angeles-based artist has been a pioneer of social practice, feminism and performance art since the 1970s.
