Patriarchal Visuality: The Modern Museum and Sexualized Violence
Free admission, no booking required, in German
Lecture by Univ.-Prof. Mag. PhD. Elke Krasny, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna
In historical retrospect, the modern museum is a gathering place for visual manifestations of gender relations. The museum displayed bodies and sexuality as sites of patriarchal dominance. The prestige of the museum made sexualized violence, particularly through the appropriation of ancient mythology, a cultural norm. The lecture analyzes the modern museum as a site of patriarchal cultural norms. Through examples, it will be shown how curatorial and artistic practices make the museum a visible perpetrator of sexual violence and femicide, and how the museum today can be a place of resistance against sexualized violence and femicides.
